New Disorders Workgroup Winter Webinar Series Part Two: Considerations for Infectious Disease Screening or Monitoring in the Newborn Screening Program

The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) Newborn Screening Technical assistance and Evaluation Program (NewSTEPs) is pleased to announce the second webinar in the New Disorders Workgroup Winter Webinar Series on Thursday, February 4 at 2:00 pm ET. This three-part webinar series will provide updates from programs screening for disorders not currently on the RUSP, both as pilot programs and as components of universal screening. This series will end with a discussion of future disorders that have been nominated for review by the Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children (ACHDNC) and/or are in current pilots.

This webinar will provide an overview of infectious diseases being screened for by newborn screening programs. Speakers will focus on the screening considerations for infectious diseases such as Congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). New uses of dried blood spots in COVID-19 efforts will also be presented.

OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the program, the participant will be able to:

  • Review screening considerations for cCMV, HIV, and other infectious diseases
  • Discuss the application of the newborn screening dried blood spots in state COVID-19 activities
  • Discuss the role of the newborn screening program in the monitoring and follow-up of infectious diseases 
  • Describe state pilot activities for cCMV and COVID-19
